AS THE world's biggest and most popular video-sharing site, YouTube allows viewers around the world to connect with each other whenever they watch or upload videos.

Millions of Malaysians visit the site every day, and now they can share the same experience on the newly-launched YouTube Malaysia.

The new service offers a local interface for Malaysians to easily and quickly find videos most relevant to them, including expanded content from local and global partners.

Users can visit this localised Malaysia site by choosing "Malaysia" as the location setting at the bottom of the YouTube.com homepage or going directly to www.youtube.com.my.

The experience will be largely similar to using the international YouTube service, except that videos and content by Malaysians will be highlighted first.

Adam Smith, director of product management for YouTube in the Asia-Pacific region, said: "Over the last few years, Malaysians have been watching YouTube in huge numbers, and by launching a version of the site optimised for Malaysia, we aim to create an even more relevant local YouTube experience."

Smith noted that YouTube had allowed several local filmmakers and musicians to promote their work.

He cited the success story of Malaysian singer Zee Avi, who was discovered through YouTube and who now has a recording contract in the US.

YouTube has inked deals with top Malaysian media companies like KRU Studios and Astro, to help them distribute their content to a wider internet audience.

YouTube also signed a licensing agreement that will allow Malaysian musicians and composers represented by the non-profit organisation, Music Authors' Copyright Protection (MACP), to earn revenue on YouTube.

Revenue is generated when advertisements are displayed against YouTube partner's videos.

Under this agreement, Malaysian authors will now receive payments from their associations when rights holders distribute them.
Among the advertisers already signed up to YouTube Malaysia are Dutch Lady, Malaysia Airlines, Maxis and Standard Chartered, with more advertisers expected in the weeks ahead.
