Google Go 1 is go; apps a go go; devs agog - Computerworld (blog)

Google Go gopher Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) is proud to announce the first stable release of Go, its spiffy, easy-to-use, open-source programming language. Go 1 is now available for your downloading pleasure. In IT Blogwatch, bloggers check it out.

By Richi Jennings: Your humble blogwatcher curated these bloggy bits for your entertainment. Not to mention: Sci-Fi Movie Alphabet...

Paul Krill swims with the little tiny fishes:

[The] open source Go [is] a general-purpose language suitable for...application development [and] systems programming and offering...garbage collection and concurrency. It also is intended to be easy.
...
Go 1...support[s] binary distributions [for] Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, and Windows. The language also [supports] Google's App Engine cloud platform. ... Google has sought to address [a] need for faster software development [for] multicore chips.    M0RE

Frederic Lardinois adds:

This release also marks the first time that a native support for Go is available [for] Windows.
...
Dart, another language developed by Google's engineers, is mostly meant for web applications, while...Go aim[s] to [be] a modern general-purpose language for networked and multicore computing. ... [It] includes ideas from...languages like Pascal, Newsqueak and Limbo.
...
Until now, the [Go] changed regularly and some of these changes likely broke existing code. Now, Google...will ensure that...further addition[s] to Go won't break existing programs.    M0RE

Google's Andrew Gerrand gets going:

The driving motivation for Go 1 is stability. ... People who write Go 1 programs can be confident that those programs will continue to compile and run...in many environments, on a time scale of years. ... Forward compatibility is part of stability.
...
[It] eliminates the need for Makefiles...because it uses the Go program source itself to derive the build instructions. No more build scripts!
...
Go 1 is the result of a major effort by the core Go team and our many contributors. ... We thank everyone who helped make this happen. ... Everything you need to get started is at golang.org.    M0RE

And Zach Walton is transfixed by gopher cuteness:

Besides having one of the most adorable mascots ever...after three years and over 200 people contributing to the project, the Go Project has reached a major milestone.
...
If you have no idea what Go is...they have an interactive demo...that allows you to write simple code in Go showing off its unicode support and other functions.    M0RE

Meanwhile, Harrison Weber grills the history:

Born out of frustration with existing languages and environments...Go has been in development since 2007.
...
The project still has "experimental status" right now, but as far as we can tell it's made huge improvements. ... Overall, it's a big undertaking that may pay off, as there hasn't been a new major systems language in over a decade.    M0RE

And Finally...
