PROVO, Utah, Mar 13, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- "Paying too much for tax preparation is a lot like... throwing money away" is the message behind each of the viral videos posted by FreeTaxUSA(R) on the popular video website YouTube(R). The video with over a million views shows a brand new iPad being destroyed by a 400 grain slug from a 12 gauge shotgun. The video was recorded using an advanced high speed camera at 9,300 frames per second for slow motion viewing. "We agree that it's a bit dramatic, but the message is clear. Each year thousands of dollars are thrown away on more expensive tax preparation services," Director of Marketing Matt Gause explains. "For every five people that use our competitors' software, and pay an average of $100 to file their taxes, it's as if a $500 iPad has been wasted. People are literally throwing money away."
The first attempt at creating a viral video has proven successful for FreeTaxUSA. Within 24 hours of posting the video Gizmodo.com, CrunchGear.com, and a number of other websites featured it on their homepages. A short time later the video won $10,000 in Google's 2011 'TV for All' video contest and made it to the front page of the social sharing website Digg.com. The prize money from Google was then used to fund a national ad campaign which brought in millions of additional views for the brand.
For a video that cost less than $3,000 to make, the company is pleased with their return on investment. But FreeTaxUSA acknowledges the biggest return comes from satisfied customers telling their friends about the website. "We understand the value of customer satisfaction. We offer quality online tax filing without using pricing gimmicks common to other companies. We believe in treating customers with respect and know satisfied returning visitors are our biggest asset," Mr. Gause concludes.
