Today,
Google honors the birth -- 126 years ago -- of architect Ludwig
Mies van der Rohe with a building Chicagoans might recognize: Crown Hall at the Illinois Institute of technology.
Today's "Google doodle" is a colorful version of that rectangular building, which the German-born architect Mies designed as head of the architecture school it continues to house. The building, completed in 1956, was designed with a drive-in restaurant in mind and contains no columns in its interior.
Mies had a massive influence on Chicago architecture and Crown Hall is said to be his greatest masterpiece.
