If Google is committed to its mission statement "to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful" then the company has a great opportunity here in Kansas City (3-31, A1, "Digital divide likely to grow"). Google has come far with "organizing the world's information," but it still has a long way to go to "make it universally accessible and useful."
I suggest Google start by laying the first meter of Google fiber at 65th Street and Troost Avenue. For generations, this corridor has been known as the racial divide in our town, and it has also become the digital divide.
As suggested in Scott Cannon's article on the front page, Google fiber runs the risk of widening, rather than closing, the digital gap. Google, take this important step to democratize Internet access.
Lay your high-speed broadband at 65th Street and Troost Avenue this summer, and watch how fast businesses, entrepreneurs, not-for-profits, churches and schools come running to make good things happen in this humble neighborhood.
What a collaboration tool your services could provide, and you would create a bridge over this notorious divide.
