WASHINGTON –  You'll soon be able to tour "The People's House" from the comfort of your own home, as 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue gets a new address online.

The White House has teamed with the Google Art Project to develop a virtual tour of the president's residence -- a process driven by US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama's desire for their home to be more accessible.

The tour -- which will explore the White House's public rooms, halls and artworks -- will be among a raft of new features from 16 U.S. cities on Google's new venture, with more details to be revealed later Tuesday.

'We've made it a priority to invite young people, military families and Americans of all ages to join us here at the White House.'

- Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama, who joined her husband on public tours of the White House after his January 2009 inauguration, filmed a video welcome for the online tour, saying, "The White House isn't simply a home to first families or meeting space for world leaders, it's also known as 'The People's House,' a place that should be open to everyone."

"And that's why we've made it a priority to invite young people, military families and Americans of all ages to join us here at the White House," she added.

"Thousands of people have walked these halls and ... examined the portraits of Washington, Lincoln and Kennedy. They've imagined the history that's unfolded here. And now you can do all of that without leaving your home. So ... enjoy the history and the beauty of these rooms. Because after all, this is your house, too."

The tour will be accessible at www.googleartproject.com.
